Here are NHTSA's official SFST validation studies.

Early lab studies and failed field validation studies

1977

Psychophysical Tests for DWI Arrest M. Burns, H. Moskowitz
The data set for this study is .

1981

Development and Field Test of Psychophysical Tests for DWI Arrest V. Tharp, M. Burns, H. Moskowitz
Said to validate the SFST at 0.10% BAC. The data set for this study is .

1983

Field Evaluation of a Behavioral Test Battery for DWI  T Anderson, R Schweitz, M Snyder
This study reworks the data from the 1981 study. The data set for this study is .

NHTSA's (apparently) successful SFST field validation studies

1995

A Colorado Validation Study of the Standardized Field Sobriety Test (SFST) Battery Marcelline Burns & Ellen Anderson
Said to validate the SFST at 0.05% BAC and at 0.10% BAC! The data set for this study is .

1997

A Florida Validation Study of the Standardized Field Sobriety Test (S.F.S.T.) Battery Marceline Burns and Teresa Dioquino
Said to validate the SFST at 0.08% BAC. The data set for this study is .

1998

Validation of the Standardized Field Sobriety Test Batter at BACs Below 0.10 Percent Jack Stuster and Marceline Burns
Said to validate the SFST at 0.08% BAC and 0.04% BAC. The data for this study is available and posted here.

  • On innocent drivers, at BAC 0.08%, the SFST has an accuracy of 28%.
  • On innocent drivers, at BAC 0.04%, the SFST has an accuracy of 4%. That's not a typo. Four percent. Ninety-six percent of innocent drivers fail the SFST.

2007

The Robustness of the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus Test Dr. Marceline Burns
If this report does not end the forensic use of HGN, nothing can. Said to "validate" HGN whether it's done correctly or not. HGN even works on blind people! Gives raw data that actually proves HGN is highly unreliable and not valid. See page 15

  • HGN was so terrible they had to invent new interpretation criteria
  • Everyone who takes the Lack of Smooth Pursuit portion of the HGN test fails LSP.
